The mansion is a villa in the Italianate style designed by architect Alexander Jackson Davis in 1850 for artist and inventor Samuel F. B. Morse. In 1901 the home was purchased by William and Martha Young of Poughkeepsie. Their daughter, Annette Innis Young, became the sole owner in 1953. Upon her death, she established a not-for-profit foundation to ensure that her home of eighty years, and the Young family's 15,000-piece collection of furniture, paintings, and decorative arts would be preserved for "the enjoyment, visitation, and enlightenment of the public."
The 180 acre estate includes a Carriage House with original carriages, landscaped grounds with Hudson River views, five miles of hiking trails, the restored Kitchen Garden and Cutting Garden, and a visitor center with gift shop and exhibit galleries. Group tours available midweek by appointment.Winner Dutchess Tourism History Award of Distinction
