Located within the Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site, this "secret" little garden is both historic and significant in many ways. Beatrix Farrand was a pioneering landscape architect—or as she preferred to call herself, a landscape gardener. One of the only women practicing landscape architecture in the early 1900s, Farrand completed numerous commissions for both public and private enjoyment. The garden at Bellefield is her earliest surviving residential design, created for her cousins, the Newbold family. In 2023, the Beatrix Farrand Garden Association expanded the landscape with the creation of an exterior Wild Garden, reviving an important element of Farrand’s original vision for the site.
The garden is open daily for public enjoyment, and private walks, photos, and picnics are encouraged. Visitors can explore the garden at their own pace, experiencing her design vision firsthand. Throughout the year, concerts, talks, workshops, and lectures offer new ways to engage with the garden, ensuring the space remains full of beauty, learning, and life—just as Farrand intended. Parking and restrooms are available in the Wallace Center.
