"Bee Amazed!" - An Up-Close Adventure with Honeybees at the Mid-Hudson Discovery Museum

Discover how thousands of bees work together as a colony and learn about the important role honeybees and other pollinators play in the environment. This interactive program led by Richard and Melissa Kurtz gives children and families an up-close encounter with live honeybees in a safe observation hive. Participants also have an opportunity to handle beekeeping equipment, learn how beekeepers care for their colonies, and explore the many useful products that come from a healthy hive, including honey, beeswax, propolis, and pollen. Most importantly, this program encourages children to appreciate the amazing lives of honeybees and understand why bees and other pollinators are so important.

Richard and Melissa frequently visit the Mid-Hudson Discovery Museum with their grandchildren and are excited to share their lifelong passion for honeybees as both beekeepers and educators. They have been beekeepers for more than 40 years and enjoy introducing children and families to the fascinating world inside a honeybee colony and showing how these tiny insects help support plants, animals, and people.
