Please join the Wassaic Project for the opening of the 2026 Summer Exhibition, "Because, now is the time of monsters," on May 16 with a reception from 36 p.m.! Admission is always free (suggested donation of $10).
Also on May 16, the drop-in art making space for children, Art Nest, will be open from 126 p.m. From 4:306 p.m., visitors can experience Ace Lehner's "Barbershop: The Art of Queer Failure," and at 8 p.m., Nate King will project his original video "When I Was Younger and Now That I'm Older" on the outside of the Wassaic Project's seven-story gallery, Maxon Mills, which is a former grain elevator.
"Because, now is the time of monsters" features 39 artists in and around Maxon Mills throughout the summer. The show's title points back to Antonio Gramsci's "Prison Notebooks," written from a fascist prison cell, where he described the interregnum, the space between a dying world and one not yet born, as fertile ground for opportunists and monsters alike. That prism splits the present moment, too: what was whole comes apart, and what fills the spaces between is yet to be determined. The artists in this show have answered from somewhere inside it.
Wassaic Projects regular hours are ThursdaySunday from 125 p.m. The exhibition will stay open through Sept. 12.
