Join Lily & Marigold Home + Design and Art Therapist Tara DeLuca for a Kintusgi workshop!
Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery. If a bowl is broken, rather than discarding the pieces, the fragments are put back and the cracks are adorned with gold. There are no attempts to hide the damage, instead, it is highlighted. The practice has come to represent the idea that beauty can be found in imperfection.
During this workshop, you will use contemporary materials and approaches. Each participant will connect with their bowl, break it, confront the damage and take ownership of the pieces that remain by painting and glueing them back together. The bowl will be changed forever, just as each person is through their own personal experiences.
Participants will have the opportunity to learn, create and share. They will learn about this historic art form and how it applies to each person. They will then be guided through a modern approach and break, paint and rebuild their own bowl, showing and creating a connection and ownership of their journey. Once the bowl is painted, participants highlight the cracks with gold glue, making it unique to them and more beautiful than it once was. Participants will also have the opportunity to share collectively or in small groups, conversing about how everyone has been broken in various ways, and how there is strength in the growth of the rebuild. As an Art Therapist, Tara offers opportunities for connection through the art relating it to self and self-healing:
What was once broken does not always stay that way
Broken, repaired, and new
Calming, shared experience, self-care
The concept expresses how the passage of time can further increase the beauty in the imperfect
