New York Stage and Film has been an incubator for emerging and established artists and their work since 1985, and this summers 40th annual festival on Marist Universitys scenic riverfront campus features four weeks full of imaginative and insightful plays and musicals. Hundreds of artists trace their developmental roots to New York Stage and Film, including the Tony Award winners "Hamilton" (Lin-Manuel Miranda), "Hadestown" (Anais Mitchell), "The Humans" (Stephen Karam), and "Doubt" (John Patrick Shanley).
"None: A Practical Breviary"
"None: A Practical Breviary" is more than a traditional musical, it's a light and sound feast and features a 13-member ensemble to explore and excavate this feeling of abandonment by the divine, mirrored in a walk out into space. The music is lush, an infusion of gospel, classical, neo-soul and rock, played by a teacup orchestra alongside NASA field recordings from the solar system. This version at New York Stage and Film is the first time this material will be heard and is the beginning of a larger process/investigation into how light and sound can marry and make a new kind of expressive storytelling.
Venue: Nelly Goletti Theatre at Marist University
Performances: Aug. 1, 7 p.m.; Aug. 2, 7 p.m.
