In ancient Chinese philosophy, the Tao is the natural way or path of the universe which is understood through the experience of everyday life, and Taoism encourages living in harmony with this underlying universal order. Its seminal text, the Tao Te Ching, abounds with wise, poetic, and sometimes humorous observations that are just as relevant today as when first written more 2,500 years ago. This offers a perfect lens through which to explore two other important Chinese art forms: garden design and the exercise system known as Qigong.
Qigongs relaxed, flowing movements as well as Innisfree Garden and the Chinese garden ideas that influenced it reflect the fundamental harmony, balance, and rhythms of nature. Qigong guides you to breathe deeply you we stand with the stability and resilience of a firmly rooted tree or to move like water, refreshing and replenishing your life-force vitality, or qi. At Innisfree, modernist landscape architect Lester Collins looked to nature and cultural traditions around the world for proven solutions to universal problems when choreographing a memorable, even healing, experience in a healthy, biodiverse landscape.
In this carefully curated walk, Qigong teacher Cris Caivano and Innisfree landscape curator Kate Kerin will guide the group through the garden and a series of site-specific Qigong exercises and reflections on the design and history of Innisfree.
This all-ages program is beginner friendly. Participants should wear comfortable shoes and clothing that allow for easy movement.
