Distortion Society presents "Sunlight Through Our Eyes," a solo exhibition of new work by Gemma Bailey. There will be an opening reception on June 8 from 7–9:30 p.m. The show will run through Aug. 3. The gallery is open Wednesday through Friday from 11 a.m.–5:30 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m.–6 p.m. or by appointment.

In this collection of paintings and collage on paper, Bailey relishes the natural world in a contemplative celebration of plants, focusing on themes of acceptance and the importance of slowing down. Though the work is derived from the biosphere of plants and nature, there is a combination of organic and synthetic elements that interact with one another.

Bailey expresses the inherent playfulness of flora through whimsical compositions that balance organic shapes, geometric elements, muted colors and soft embellishments. Patterned leaves tickle one another in a delicate dance, blades of grass blow in the wind, and vines creep toward the sun. As you dive deeper, subtle flourishes appear: tiny seeds, fuzzy trichomes, and stringy veins. Her work’s tactile and aural qualities deepen your connection with nature’s therapeutic properties so that you may begin a process of letting go and surrendering to the imperfections of human existence.
