Mad Rose Gallery presents an exhibition featuring the black-and-white photography of Fred Stein, which will run from April 11 through May 5.
Fred Stein's journey through history landed him in 1930s Paris, a seminal time for photography. Forced to flee from Germany by the Nazis in 1933, Stein reinvented himself as a photographer in Paris, pioneering techniques that would define his craft. He shot exclusively in black-and-white, utilizing available light and hand-held cameras to create compositions that transcended mere observation, embodying the principles of Modernism and the New Vision.
Be sure to attend the opening reception on April 13, which will feature a series of special events. Peter Stein, the son of Fred Stein, manages his father's archive and is the producer and co-director of the documentary film "Out of Exile: The Photography of Fred Stein." A screening of this film and a discussion at The Moviehouse in Millerton at 1:30 p.m. will precede the exhibition's opening reception on April 13. The opening reception with Peter Stein will be held at Mad Rose Gallery from 4 7 p.m.

Mad Rose Gallery will also host an In Conversation on April 21 from 3:30 5 p.m. with Peter Stein featuring Lothar Osterburg titled Immigrant in New Country. Osterburg is a German-born, New York-based artist and master printer in intaglio who works in sculpture, photography, printmaking and video. He is best known for photogravures featuring rough, small-scale models of rustic structures, water and air vessels, and imaginary cities, staged in evocative settings and photographed to appear life-size to disorienting, mysterious or whimsical effect.
