BAU Gallery presents a solo exhibition by visual artist Jebah Baum, as well as an exhibition highlighting a rich cross disciplinary collaboration between composer Steven Takasugi and Baum.
"Guardians Against Evil Dreams: Sculptures and Works on Paper" will be Baum's fifth one-person exhibition at BAU Gallery. Like the striations of an abraded cliff face or the battered and scarred surface of a bronze age shield, Jebah Baums recent work evokes a sense of resistance. Baum harvests and makes his own materials, thus imbuing his art with an intensely physical presence. The accumulated gestural marks in his sculptures and works on paper reflect a rigorous engagement with form, but nothing appears to be in stasis and his repeated overlaying of shapes, lines and textures creates a bulwark against direct association.
"An Audio/Visual Collaboration: Steven Takasugi and Jebah Baum" will be their third presentation at BAU Gallery. It includes an idiosyncratic grouping of crushed music stands that are instantly recognizable, although they no longer serve their intended purpose. These now-sculptural objects will also serve as percussion instruments in the premier of a new Takasugi composition in Melbourne, Australia, in 2025.
Both exhibits will be on display through May 5. Be sure to attend the opening reception for both on April 13 from 6 8 p.m. and a live musical performance by Steve Frieder and Marisa Tornello on April 18 from 6 8 p.m. BAU Gallery is open Saturdays and Sundays from 12 6 pm or by appointment.
