There is no denying the magic of Wildersteins Carriage House. When approaching the hidden clearing where this magnificent structure is sited, visitors lose their sense of time and place. As if the scene were taken from an Ivan Bilibin fairytale illustration, imaginations often run wild with childhood stories of princesses, macabre witches and heroic knights from distant lands. The Queen Anne structure draws you in with decorative gables, a large, onion-shaped dome, brick and embellished rusticated brownstone bands, and unique architecture overtones.
The building was designed for horses to reside on the first level and had a hayloft and storage space for sleighs and carriages on the second floor. It was once integral to the operation of the estate and included stables, a tack room, and carriage wash. After the automobile was invented, the Suckley family utilized the Carriage House largely as a garage for their numerous vehicles.
The next phase of restoration work is moving forward and will focus on replacing the roof and straightening the turret. This will bring the project closer to the long-term goal of Wildersteins Carriage House becoming a visitor and education center!
To help raise the necessary funding, please attend the special Discover the Carriage House. The building will be open for tours, antique cars will be on display, there will be live music, and seasonal refreshments will be served.
