During the 18th century, enslavement in Dutchess County was reaching its peak. Quakers in the eastern part of the county were calling for an end to enslavement, while enslaved men and women were taking freedom into their hands by “running away.” This talk will examine aspects of this move toward freedom, focusing on Poughkeepsie and the surrounding areas.
