This Little Light of Mine: A Martinmas Lantern Workshop and Procession at Staatsburgh State Historic Site

Dating to medieval times, Martinmas is a procession of lanterns marking the end of the harvest and the start of winter. It's a reminder to kindle warmth and light as the darkest time of the year begins. In this 90-minute workshop, children will decorate a mason jar to make a lantern to keep. The group will then proceed outdoors as the sun sets over the Hudson River, singing songs about light. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Appropriate for ages 3 and up. All materials are provided. Please dress for an outdoor walk.
